FYI, the choice apparently isn't binary - free or paid. There's a 3rd option that current management is testing -- HEAVILY DISCOUNT the subscriptions, gain tons of readership, work on sky-high renewal rates (a given for this product and the customer base) and basically take in tons of more traffic to monetize.
e.g. WSJ.com online was $99 per year while print subscriptions were $215 per year just months ago. WSJ has begun to heavily discount and bundle both together for only $125 for 1 year COMBINED + throwing in 2 extra months for the subscriptions. (for example, see: http://1.wallstreetjournaI.googlepages.com) That sounds nuts from a business perspective, but I bet the renewal retention rates are above 90%. WSJ is not the typical promotional offer product.
